Was TeamViewer Hacked?
Jun 07, 2016
TeamViewer is a tool used by professionals and casual users alike for remote access to computer systems. Thus far it has had a great security record and an impressive toolset. Recently however an increased number of reports seem to indicate that Computers with TeamViewer installed have had unauthorised access by a “significant” number of hackers.
TeamViewer themselves have looked into the matter over the past week and maintain that the compromises are the result of user’s passwords that were “stolen” via mega breaches with companies such as LinkedIn, MySpace and other services over the past year.
As always, the advice is to change passwords regularly – and if a hack is ever reported to immediately reset all passwords. For anyone using TeamViewer right now, we would recommend you do so immediately.
We should also note here that Tropical Business Solutions uses TeamViewer heavily – from server maintenance right through to remote support (via the Tropical Agent). The methods we use for authentication are completely safe and random, thus not a risk from the above threat.
